Have-a-go heroine pensioner chases thieves from her home

By Staff Reporter

A woman in her 70s was injured when she confronted an armed intruder in her west Belfast house early yesterday morning - forcing him and an accomplice to flee empty-handed.

Just before 2am police received a report that two men, one armed with a screwdriver, had entered the Springfield Park house by the rear door and gained access to a utility room.

It is understood the pensioner was able to scare the would-be thieves off and protect her property. A PSNI detective said: "The female occupant, aged in her 70s, heard the men enter and managed to prevent them from progressing any further into the house.

"The men then left through the back door empty-handed. The woman was treated by ambulance staff for shock and a cut to her head."

Anyone with any information is being urged to contact detectives at Musgrave on 101, quoting reference number 174 12/03/17, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
