Heroin addict jailed for hijacking
A heroin addict who "opportunistically" hijacked a car from a woman was caught after he left behind his baseball cap.
James Loughran was jailed for two years at Belfast Crown Court yesterday for the incident which Judge Kinney said "was clearly a traumatic and distressing experience for the lone female victim".
The court had heard how the woman was sitting in the passenger seat of a Vauxhall Vectra on Union Street on October 6, 2011 while her friend was in a betting shop. The driver had left the keys in the ignition and engine running when Loughran jumped into the driver's seat and ordered the woman out.
Loughran, from Navan Street in Belfast, and with a "substantial" criminal record of 89 offences, was arrested after his DNA profile was uncovered in a baseball cap he had left behind in the stolen car and later pleaded guilty to hijacking and driving while disqualified.
Loughran was also banned from driving for five years.
