By Staff Reporter

A hijacker ran out in front of a van and smashed the window before taking the vehicle and burning it out, police have said.

Officers are appealing for information following the incident in the Springfield Drive area of Belfast in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Detective Sergeant Keith Wilson said: "At approximately 4.50am police received a report that as a man was driving his van along the Springfield Drive an unknown man ran in front of his vehicle and broke the driver's side window with a bottle. This man proceeded to assault the driver and then ordered him out of the van.

"The van was later found burnt out at approximately 5.15am in the Distillery Street area."

The hijacker was around 5ft 10in, clean shaven, of slim to medium build and in his mid-20s. He wore a white/grey Adidas top and dark tracksuit bottoms.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact the non-emergency number 101.
