Hijackers take car as driver halts at crossing

By Nevin Farrell

A driver was left badly shaken after three men pulled him out of his car and stole the vehicle when he stopped at a zebra crossing in the early hours of yesterday.

The hijacking happened in the Kennedy Way area of west Belfast and the car was later found burnt out in Ballymurphy in the city.

Detective Sergeant Conor Sweeney said: "The car, a grey BMW, was found a short time later in the Mill Race area of Ballymurphy. It was completely burnt out.

"The driver was not injured but was left very badly shaken.

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident or saw this vehicle being driven between Kennedy Way and Mill Race to contact Detectives at Reactive and Organised Crime at Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101 or to ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Meanwhile, detectives investigating an attempted hijacking of a taxi in the Lavinia Square area in the lower Ormeau Road area of Belfast early yesterday arrested a 27-year-old man.
