Hilltown Road Newry crash: Little Ella (6) dies following road traffic collision

A six-year-old girl who died following a road traffic collision on the Hilltown Road in Newry has been named as Ella Trainor.

Ella from Hilltown, Co Down, was a passenger  with her mother Susan in a Volkswagen car that was involved in a collision with a Seat car and a tractor at around 9.55am.

Two women, aged 24 and 42 - one reported to be Ella's mother - were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

South Down SDLP MP Margaret Ritchie said: "It is with a deep sense of sadness that I have just learnt about the traumatic and untimely death of a young child from Hilltown in a road traffic accident this morning.

"The untimely death of any individual is always sad, but the death of a child so soon after the Christmas period is particularly poignant.

"My deepest sympathies lie with the parents, family and relatives of this child.  There is no doubt that the local community will support this family in their grief and bereavement.  The whole community of the local family will hold this family in their warm embrace.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time, and I want to convey my best wishes to the injured for a speedy recovery".

Inspector Stephen Humphries has appealed to anyone who was travelling on the Hilltown Road around this time and who witnessed the collision to contact local Police in Newry or the Collision Investigation Unit in Sprucefield on the non-emergency number 101.
