By Sophie Inge

A young handball champion injured in a hit-and-run last month has regained consciousness and spoken to his parents after being brought out of a medically-induced coma.

Conall McCavitt, who is in his 20s, was struck by a car on Cardinal O'Fiaich Square in the centre of Crossmaglen, Co Armagh, at around 6.20am on Boxing Day.

Mr McCavitt, who plays for the Eugene Quinn club in Armagh city, was taken to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital with serious injuries, where he was put into the coma.

Mr McCavitt's family said in a statement: "It's pleasing to report Conall McCavitt is now out of his coma and has spoken to his parents. He remains in intensive care with huge injuries."

The Belfast Trust described his condition as "stable".

A family member added: "The family have received tremendous support from all over the world. Conall has been prayed for by people from all denominations near and far."
