Hollywood star Liam Neeson in Michelin jobs plea to Stormont

By Lisa Smyth

Liam Neeson has urged MLAs to act to help the hundreds of Michelin workers from his home town now facing the dole.

Staff at the Michelin tyre factory were left devastated on Tuesday when bosses announced they are set to close the Co Antrim plant in 2018 with the loss of 860 jobs.

"It's tragic and the fallout will be felt throughout the whole community," the Hollywood star said.

"I am a great believer in the character and work ethic of my people in the North.

"I've always maintained that our wee corner of the globe is one of the world's best-kept secrets, not least in its potential for development in all areas of industry.

"All the more reason for the Executive and Invest Northern Ireland to really get to work now and promote the 'hell' out of the province. They have and always will have my full support."

The closure comes a year after Gallahers announced its plans to close, with the loss of more than 800 jobs in Ballymena.
