Holywood amenities meeting

By Michael Bashford

A meeting is to be held at Redburn and Loughview Community Centre over the lack of facilities for young people in the town.

Recon Community Group called the meeting, which will take place on Monday, May 24, after young people approached volunteers expressing concern over the lack of ‘things to do’ in Holywood during the week and at weekends.

Albert Martin, a volunteer at the group, said: “We have been reading about how Bangor is getting a £40 million swimming pool and all these other facilities and while we don’t begrudge that we do feel that Holywood doesn’t get its fair share of facilities.

“A number of the young people who we deal with have been telling us that there is nothing for them to do in Holywood.

“The Queen’s Hall complex is too expensive and the community hall they simply won’t use.

“In fact, they are now telling us that a number of youngsters are now beginning to dabble in alcohol and drugs because there is simply nothing to do and nowhere to go in the town.”

Recon Community Group has been running for approximately four years and not only works with young people in Holywood but also east Belfast and across the rest of North Down.

It currently runs hip-hop classes and Sunday football for local people.
