Homes evacuated in Lurgan over security alert

A number of homes in Lurgan have been evacuated in a security alert.

Police are currently at the scene of the security alert at Allenhill Park in the Co Armagh town following the discovery of a suspicious object.

Cordons are in place and a number of homes have been evacuated whilst the object is examined.

There are no further details at present.

Upper Bann DUP Assembly candidate Carla Lockhart said the local community is being held to ransom.

"I would utterly condemn this despicable, dangerous act," she said.

"This is a large residential area with families just wanting to get on about their daily lives.  This is holding an entire community to ransom and once again bring Lurgan to the fore for all the wrong reasons.

"I am liaising with the PSNI who are currently at the scene.  I would encourage any one with any information to come forward to the PSNI and report it."

Sinn Fein's Nuala Toman also condemned those responsible for the disruption caused by a security alert in Lurgan.

The Upper Bann candidate said: "The discovery of a suspicious object in the Allenhill Park area has led to a security alert and the evacuation of people from their homes. The local community do not want this disruption to their lives on a Sunday morning, particularly those with young children and older members of our community. Whoever is behind these incidents needs to stop and let the local community get on with their lives."
