Horse killed after collision involving two cars in Ballymena

A number of people have been taken to hospital and a horse has died following a collision in Ballymena.

The crash happened early on Saturday morning on the Lisnevenagh Road.

It is understood a Vauxhall Vectra initially struck the animal before it was hit by a second vehicle, a Volkswagen Bora.

The horse was killed in the crash.

Inspector Peter Duncan said: “The driver of the Vauxhall has sustained injuries that while serious, are not thought to be life threatening. The five occupants of the second car sustained only minor injuries.

"Police investigating the collision are appealing for witnesses. Officers can be contacted on 101, quoting reference number 225 13/01/18."

The road remains closed.
