Huge anti-terror swoop at Belfast's Victoria Barracks - two arrested

A major search and recovery operation has taken place in north Belfast.

An operation took place in the Lepper Street/Carlisle Parade area of the city on Tuesday night where a number of homes were evacuated.

Police have established a number of search locations in the New Lodge area.

Searches are also commencing in the Henry Place area.

Two men, aged 36 and 37, who are members of the dissident Saoradh party were arrested under the Terrorism Act.

At approximately 3am officers from Tactical Support unit forced entry into a property in Victoria Barracks.

The operation, which continued into the early hours, involved more than 45 heavily armed PSNI officers alongside anti-terror officers.

Forensics removed a substantial number of items from the property.

Detective Inspector Andy Workman said: "The two men have been taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite where they are currently helping police with their enquiries.

“This operation has been necessary to ensure the safety of local residents and we appreciate the patience and understanding of those people who have had to leave their homes.”
