Hundreds at funeral of leading trade union official
Hundreds of mourners have attended the funeral of a popular trade union official who died suddenly.
John Dawson, a leading official with the GMB, passed away in hospital last Friday.
Friends and family of the father-of-two attended yesterday's service at Roselawn.
Mr Dawson, who was described as a "powerful man with a wealth of knowledge", worked as a trade unionist in Northern Ireland for many years.
A statement from the local GMB branch on its Facebook page read: "It is with sadness that we inform you of the sudden death of our colleague and friend John Dawson on Friday night.
"Our thoughts are with his family at this time and he will be sorely missed by his extended GMB family and friends too."
Mr Dawson represented employees in various cases, particularly staff at primary and secondary schools facing budget cuts.
A short service took place at his home yesterday afternoon before committal at Roselawn Crematorium.
The cause of his death is not known.
GMB member Neil Smith said after the funeral: "RIP John Dawson 'Starman' see you the other side brother."
In a death notice, he was described as the dearly-loved and loving husband of Liz, and father of Jonathan and the late Steven.
Other friends took to social media in tribute to the popular grandfather from Belfast.
One friend posted on Facebook: "One of life's true gentlemen, have fond memories."
Another said: "He will be sorely missed. Thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time."
