Hundreds brave icy waters for New Year swim in Northern Ireland

By Staff Reporter

Hundreds of hardy swimmers from Northern Ireland took the plunge on New Year's Day for charity.

Many gathered on Crawfordsburn beach in Co Down, where they dived into the freezing water for Cancer Focus NI.

The event, now in its third year, helps raise much-needed funds for Cancer Focus' Family Support Service.

Challenge events officer Jillian Wallace thanked those who took part. "We're delighted so many people took part in the event, which is growing in popularity each year," she said.

Despite the chill, around 80 swimmers also braved the elements in Carnlough harbour to raise money for Ballymena Spina Bifida Association.

The annual New Year's Day sponsored swim was the 46th and included many old hands - some with more than 40 swims under their belt.
