Hunt is on for axeman who raided off-licence in north Belfast

Detectives in north Belfast are appealing for information after an armed robbery at an off-licence.

The incident happened in the Oldpark Road area on Wednesday evening.

Shortly before 6.40pm two men approached the licensed premises.

One man entered the shop armed with a hatchet, as the other man waited outside on a motorcycle.

The man inside the shop threatened two female members of staff and made off with a sum of money.

No member of staff was injured during the incident, but damage was caused.

The motorcyclist headed off towards Alliance Road as the axeman was briefly stopped by members of the public before making off towards the Westland area with the stolen cash. Inquiries are continuing.

Police are asking anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area to contact CID at Tennent Street on 0845 600 8000.
