Hydebank Wood incident: 14 prisoners receive medical treatment in Belfast

Fourteen prisoners have received medical treatment during an incident at Hydebank Wood College in south Belfast.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service responded to reports that a number of people were feeling unwell at the youth detention centre at 5.20pm on Friday.

Three prisoners were taken to the Ulster Hospital, while a fourth prisoner was brought to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

A spokesman for the NIAS said their condition was not thought to be life-threatening.

Prison staff are understood to be investigating a suspected drugs link.

Earlier the NI Prison Service confirmed an incident was ongoing at the young offenders prison.

A Prison Service spokesman told the Belfast Telegraph: “The Prison Service confirm that there is an ongoing incident at Hydebank Wood.

“However, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
