Hydro power first at Shane's Castle
A new chapter in Northern Ireland’s search for a sustainable future has been opened with the completion of a hydroelectric scheme in Antrim, marking it as a first for Northern Ireland.
Lord O’Neill has reinstated an old hydro system at Shane’s Castle, installing a 214KW Archimedean screw hydro turbine, enabling it to contribute to the electricity required by the estate and to help lower its annual energy bills.
The hydro system, which received funding from the Northern Ireland Electricity SMART programme, will generate around 1.3 million units of electricity each year and will reduce the amount of CO2 emitted into the local atmosphere by up to 840 tonnes each year.
Lord O’Neill told the Antrim Times: ““The hydro scheme allows us to reduce our carbon emissions within the local environment and in turn is also helping us to reduce our energy costs.”
