Ill man took wife's car for trip to shop

By Staff Reporter

An unemployed music teacher caught driving his wife's car while uninsured took the vehicle to go to a shop up a hill because a lung condition means he suffers from a lack of energy.

Martin Joseph McGuile (51), of Fairhill Street, Armoy, Co Antrim, told police his wife had no knowledge of him taking the car.

His lawyer told Coleraine Magistrates' Court yesterday his client was having a particularly bad day with his condition on June 2 this year, and took the car to get groceries. District Judge Liam McNally banned McGuile from driving for four months and fined him a total of £350 after the defendant pleaded guilty to charges of no insurance, no licence, no MOT and taking a vehicle without the owner's consent.
