In my day: We quiz Orla McKeating on the time of her life

By Staff Reporter

Q: What was your decade?

A: The early noughties! I was working as a hair and make-up artist. I was based in Brussels, but worked in Paris and Amsterdam.

Q: What was life like?

A: Absolutely crazy! I worked hard and played hard. I spent my days doing shoots and shows and my nights working in a restaurant, then utilising the intense Belgian nightlife.

Q: What were you listening too?

A: I was listening to lots of electro music.

Q: And the style?

A: Belgium was and still is very influential in the fashion scene. My friends were designers, make-up artists and photographers so we were all very creative and experimental in our dress and behaviour.

Q: What has changed?

A: On a personal level, a new country, a new career and a new baby. I took all of the international influences I had picked up working in coffee shops and restaurants in Belgium and opened my own coffee shop - Boden Park Coffee Company. On a professional level, Belfast has changed and developed so much.

Q: What was better back then?

A: I loved being a part of the developing scene in Belgium, and I learnt so much.

  • Orla McKeating is the owner of Boden Park Coffee Company, Belfast
