In My Day: We quiz Robin Mercer on the time of his life

Q What was your decade?

A. The 1990s

Q. What was life like back then?

A. We had a busy family life with three boys and we moved Hillmount to a new, purpose-built shop with a restaurant. I then had my mid-life crisis at 40 and decided to take up hot-air ballooning.

Q. What were you listening to?

A. I liked to listen to Hendy on Downtown Radio but the children preferred Britney or Robbie Williams. If I had the car to myself I would listen to Billy Joel or Cher.

Q. And the style?

A. I'm not a follower of fashion but I do like my shirts. In those days I wore a shirt and tie but now the tie is only used on special occasions.

Q. What has changed since then?

A. Our children have left home, got married and found their own careers. Mobile phones are smaller. Technology has improved with our business selling online and social media is now important to our business.

Q. What was better back then?

A. There was not as much pressure at work, the pace of life was slower and customers had more time to chat.
