Inmate who hit Magilligan Prison warder caged again

A man has been jailed for two months after punching a prison officer on the chin at Magilligan Prison.

Stewart White (29), of Main Street, Lisbellaw, admitted the offence which occurred on June 29, 2012, at Limavady Magistrates Court.

The court was told that police received a report of a prison officer being assaulted.

The incident occurred when the officer entered White's cell to tell him he was being moved and the defendant punched him on the chin.

The incident was witnessed by prison officers and CCTV.

White was not interviewed as he was deemed to be unfit.

A defence solicitor told the court her client had "significant mental health issues" and had been segregated from other prisoners in the jail.

She said that when the prison officer told White he was being put back among the other prisoners he felt frightened and lashed out.

District Judge Liam McNally said that an assault on a prison officer doing his duty would always be met with custody.
