Inquiry after pipe bomb explodes

A pipe bomb has partially exploded in Co Down.

A woman reported hearing a loud bang outside her home at Church Green in Holywood early on Tuesday.

An army bomb disposal team recovered the device and it was removed for forensic examination.

A PSNI spokesman said: "No-one is believed to have been injured during the incident."

Detectives appealed for anybody with information to contact them.

DUP MLA Alex Easton said: "This is a totally reckless incident which could have killed someone living at this house in Church Green, Holywood.

"Those involved have no regard for humanity and are devoid of feelings and the hurt they could have caused.

"This is a quiet area and this street in particular has a lot of children living and playing in the area and this incident could have easily hurt or killed someone, the residents of Loughview do not want this sort of incident in their area.

"Those involved need to wise up before someone is killed, and I am calling on anyone with information to pass it onto the PSNI so that those involved can be brought before the courts."
