Internet pervert jailed for 12 months

An internet pervert who looked at almost 400 images of child abuse on a computer in Belfast Central Library has been jailed for a year.

Belfast Crown Court Judge Tom Burgess also ordered John George Kennedy Reid, who turns 41 next week, to sign the police sex offenders’ register for the next 10 years and also barred him from working with children.

In jailing Reid, who had to be extradited from Gibraltar last June to face the court, Judge Burgess said he was at high risk of reoffending given the fact that these new offences were committed while on bail for similar charges.

The court heard that on two consecutive days library staff spotted Reid looking at websites containing images of children being abused.

Arrested and interviewed, Reid denied doing anything wrong. However he later pleaded guilty to a total of 33 charges of possessing indecent images of children.

As well as the jail term, Judge Burgess imposed a 10-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order barring him from unsupervised contact with children.
