IRA memorial mayor 'was not employed by us,' says Northern Ireland school
An integrated school has distanced itself from a Sinn Fein mayor who is also a supply teacher after tweets of him posing at an IRA memorial emerged.
Sean Bateson (26) was appointed Causeway Coast and Glens mayor just days after being elected for the first time.
But Mr Bateson, a supply teacher at Sperrin Integrated College in Magherafelt, has been criticised for his attendance at IRA commemorations.
After the tweets emerged, Sinn Fein said "everyone has the right under the Good Friday Agreement to remember their dead with dignity and respect".
Yesterday, Sperrin Integrated principal College Brigid Heron said that the college advocates peace and non-violence.
"The substitute teacher you have named is not an employee of Sperrin College and has had no continuous service at the school. He is registered on the Northern Ireland Register for Substitute Teachers (NISTR) which is used by all schools in Northern Ireland."
