Irish radio Hall of Fame award for consumer champion Linda

By Staff Reporter

BBC Radio Ulster presenter Linda McAuley has been inducted into the IMRO Radio Awards Hall of Fame in Dublin in recognition of her four-decade career.

The On Your Behalf host from Bangor, Co Down, who started at the BBC in 1978, said she was delighted.

"I am overwhelmed to be given this honour, which I certainly wasn't expecting. I've been waiting for a tap on the shoulder and someone saying: 'Sorry, it's not your turn yet'," she said.

"But it's happened, and I am so grateful to all the people I've worked with and the listeners who've been a huge part of my radio career, which has spanned 40 years. For the last 22 years I've presented On Your Behalf on BBC Radio Ulster and meeting, helping and educating consumers has been an honour in itself."

Linda was officially inducted at a ceremony held at the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland offices in Dublin yesterday along with three other broadcasters - Seamus Mac Geidigh (RTE Raidio Na Gaeltachta), Billy McCarthy (WLR FM) and Joe King (Broadcast Technical Services Limited).

Michael Tumelty, head of radio, BBC Northern Ireland, said: "This is a huge and deserved accolade for Linda and the wider BBC Radio Ulster On Your Behalf team who, for decades, have supported her in righting wrongs, solving problems and issuing advice to listeners across Northern Ireland and beyond, bringing about real changes and positive outcomes in their lives.

"For more than two decades Linda has been BBC Radio Ulster's and Northern Ireland's de facto consumer champion: the friend to whom thousands of listeners turn to solve their problems, big or small."

Linda first joined BBC Radio Ulster as presenter of the evening drivetime programme Change Gear and returned in 1989 to present Morning Extra. In 1995 she helped launch On Your Behalf.
