Israel refuses entry to Gaza campaigner

By Emily Moulton

Nobel laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire has been refused entry into Israel.

The peace prize winner was detained at Ben-Gurion International Airport, Tel Aviv, yesterday following her flight from Frankfurt.

Mrs Corrigan Maguire was part of a women’s peace delegation organised by the Nobel Women’s Initiative.

A colleague of the Belfast activist, however, was allowed into the country.

Her detention comes just two days after the end of a ban on Israeli construction in Palestinian territories.

It is understood Mrs Corrigan Maguire was last night appealing her detention. She is expected to be held until her appeal is heard by the court.

Earlier this year, the Nobel peace prize winner was one of five Irish activists deported from Tel Aviv after the ship they were travelling on tried to bring aid to Gaza in defiance of Israel's blockade.
