It's a dogs life for Northern Ireland's pampered pooches in luxury five-star 'hotel'

By Stewart Robson

From corgis and chihuahuas to cocker spaniels and chinooks, all dogs are welcome at a new five-star dog hotel in Coleraine.

Alpha 1 Dog Hotel opened in April after receiving £30,000 funding from the NI Rural Development Fund. It allowed owner Ian Eccles to create five luxury kennels as well as two larger state-of-the-art rooms. There are over 20 rooms in total.

"We've five dogs of our own and it was one of those things, where do you leave them when you go away on holiday?" he said.

"We've only five luxury kennels and they're booked out nearly all of the time. They're rooms with glass patio doors on them. They've got underfloor heating and they can sit and watch DVDs on a 55-inch plasma TV.

Mr Eccles also has the support of Causeway Coast and Glens Local Action Group (LAG).

Commenting on the project, LAG chair Anthony McGarvey said: "I congratulate Ian on implementing his funded project and hope his success inspires other potential entrepreneurs in the area.

"The LAG remains keen to provide funding for both new and existing businesses in rural areas, so I encourage any interested parties to get in contact with our administration unit."
