Jail for man over outburst at Derry hospital

By Eamonn MacDermott

A court has heard how a man started asking patients at Altnagelvin Hospital if they were in the IRA.

Kenneth Ferguson (29) of the Old Fort in Strathfoyle in Londonderry, pleaded guilty to being disorderly at the hospital and to attempted criminal damage on July 4.

The city's Magistrate's Court heard that police went to Ferguson's address after being alerted to a possible bail breach.

When they arrived they found he had inflicted a serious wound on his neck and took him to Altnagelvin Hospital.

While in the hospital, he became abusive to staff and patients and started asking them about the IRA. The court was told he was "frightening" both elderly patients and children and so police removed him to a cell van outside. Once in the van he began kicking it violently.

Ferguson was sentenced to four months in prison.
