Actor James Nesbitt has been telling friends at the US Masters of the new joy in his life — his membership of Royal Portrush Golf Club.
He was informed last month that his application had been accepted by the club’s council.
Nesbitt (51) has bought a property close to the famous links and plans to spend as much time as his diary allows playing the course which is undergoing massive changes in preparation for the staging of the 2019 British Open.
He said: “I can’t wait to get on to that 1st tee again.”
The Cold Feet actor is at Augusta National with a couple of old Coleraine Inst friends, Peter Ludlow and Alastair Carson, both members of Portrush.
He skipped yesterday’s action to play a round at a neighbouring course and attended a party hosted by Andrew “Chubby” Chandler, Darren Clarke’s manager.
He is a member of Dulwich and Sydenham Hill in south east London and plays off a handicap of 15.
He said: “I’m honoured and delighted. This is the best golf course in the world — better than here (Augusta) — and the membership will strengthen my ties in a place I’ve always considered home and in a country which I love.”
