Jamie Dornan has been cast as a killer surgeon in a new series based on a true story.

The Holywood actor will play Christopher Duntsch, a surgeon from Dallas, Texas, in Dr Death.

Duntsch was convicted of gross malpractice after his operations left 31 patients seriously injured and two dead.

Dornan (37) will star alongside Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater in the drama series.

Dornan's character is described as "young, charismatic and ostensibly brilliant, he was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed".

As his victims piled up, two fellow surgeons (Baldwin and Slater) and a young assistant district attorney set out to stop him.

Dornan is no stranger to the medical world as his father is leading obstetrician Professor Jim Dornan.

He is also no stranger to sinister roles, having starred as serial killer Paul Spector on BBC's gritty Belfast-based TV show The Fall.

Universal Content Productions is reportedly shopping the project to both TV networks and streaming platforms.

Dornan was recently seen in A Private War where he starred alongside Rosamund Pike which told the story of celebrated war correspondent Marie Colvin.
