Jimmy Carr condemns torching of derelict bungalow

Residents whose home was smoke damaged after arsonists targeted a derelict bungalow next door were lucky to escape unharmed, a councillor has said.

SDLP councillor Jimmy Carr said people in the Fern Park area of Galliagh were extremely distressed following the blaze, which was reported at around 4pm.

“The attack on this house was extremely dangerous and has seriously distressed local residents and particularly those living in the adjoining house,” said Mr Carr.

“It is extremely fortunate that no-one has been killed or injured here and I would like to pay credit to the emergency services for their swift response to this inferno.

“I strongly appeal to parents to be aware as to the whereabouts of their children as we enter the summer holidays and urge anyone with information on those responsible for this incident to pass it onto the police immediately.”

Fire Service assistant group commander Barry McDowell said fire crews prevented the flames from spreading to other homes.

Police have appealed for eyewitnesses to contact them.
