Jimmy Ellis to be laid to rest in his beloved Belfast

By Ivan Little

The funeral of legendary Belfast actor Jimmy Ellis will take place on Friday, less than a mile from the Sydenham house he called home.

Stars of TV, film and theatre are expected to be at St Mark's Church, Dundela, on the Holywood Road for a funeral service which has been described as one of thanksgiving for the actor's life.

Mr Ellis (82), who died 10 days ago from a stroke in Lincoln Hospital in England, was brought up in Park Avenue close to St Mark's, where writer CS Lewis was baptised.

After his death, Mr Ellis's family revealed that the actor, best known for his role as Sgt Bert Lynch in the long-running TV series Z Cars, had always wanted to buried in his native Belfast.

Following the service the funeral cortege will travel around a number of Mr Ellis's old haunts in east Belfast, including Park Avenue and in the city centre.

Mr Ellis will be buried after a private ceremony in an as yet undisclosed location.
