Jobs boost is on way as store set to open

North Belfast received a huge jobs boost this week following the announcement that 150 full and part-time jobs are to be created this month.

TJ Hughes is to invest over £1.6million creating 16 full-time and 137 part-time jobs at Cityside Retail Park, Yorkgate when it opens on March 24.

It would be the discount department store's first shop in Northern Ireland. It currently has 52 stores across the UK.

The store has a retailing selling space of 43,000ft.

TJ Hughes has traded in Britain since its first store in Liverpool opened in 1912.

North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds said “I warmly welcome the forthcoming opening of this major new store at Yorkgate.

“This is tremendous news for north Belfast, bringing over 150 new jobs and an investment of £1.6m.

“TJ Hughes is a well-established discount department store on the mainland, with over 50 stores in England, Scotland and Wales and I am delighted that they have chosen north Belfast for their first outlet in Northern Ireland. This provides additional choice for shoppers at Cityside Retail Park and will attract customers, I am sure, from near and far.

“This represents another vote of confidence in the Northern Ireland retail market and is a positive sign of economic recovery.”

TJ Hughes chief executive Sue Tennant said: “TJ Hughes is unique in the UK retail sector in that it offers ‘can’t be beaten’ prices on branded goods in a department store environment.

“We are keen for the Northern Ireland shopper to see the store at first hand as it will be like any other discount store they are familiar with.

“Our stores operate as department stores and we stock a wide range of leading brands across ladies, mens and children’s fashions, homewares, electrical goods and much more.

“We are delighted to be launching into Northern Ireland and we believe that the TJ Hughes offering will be a huge success.”
