Justice Minister David Ford back in class to learn from drug and alcohol awareness volunteers

Justice Minister David Ford has joined volunteers at a training session on drug and alcohol awareness.

The Omagh Street Safe volunteers provide support to anyone who may be vulnerable while socialising in the Co Tyrone town on Saturday nights. The project will extend to Friday nights from today.

The scheme, led by the Omagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership, receives funding from the Department of Justice Asset Recovery Community Scheme, where money from assets seized from criminals is distributed to safer community projects.

The event, at the Silverbirch Hotel, was led by drug and alcohol awareness group Breakthru.

Mr Ford said: "Alcohol and drug awareness is an area of particular interest to the volunteers who often have to help those who get into difficulties on a night out.

"Their presence undoubtedly provides wider reassurance to the community and supports the very important night-time economy in the town."
