Karate champcaptures title

Nineteen-year-old Jessica Morrow from Kiryoku Karate Club in east Belfast has won a gold medal at the Wado International Karate-Do Federation (WIKF) British National Championships.

Although not her first UK title, it was Jessica's first gold in senior ladies' kata at national level. She also helped her club win a second consecutive team gold.

This has already been a big year for Jessica as she was awarded her first Dan black belt by Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki in February, as well as successfully defending the Northern Ireland title that she has held for four years.

Jessica said: “I'm very proud of what I have achieved, but I could never have done it without my instructor.”

Colin Bell has instructed Jessica since she started karate five years ago, and has attained national titles of his own.

With another title under her belt, Jessica is now looking ahead to the WIKF World Championships to be held in Portugal this July, and she hopes to soon become an assistant instructor at her club.
