Secretary of State Karen Bradley has said she will hold talks with Northern Ireland's political leaders later this week in wake of the murder of Lyra McKee.

Mrs Bradley said the discussions will focus on "what progress can be made" to end the political stalemate.

Last Thursday, Lyra McKee, a 29-year-old journalist, was shot dead while observing rioting in Londonderry's Creggan estate.

Police said they believe dissident republican group the New IRA were behind the attack and on Tuesday, the group claimed responsibility for the murder.

Speaking in the Commons on Tuesday, Karen Bradley said Ms McKee's death was a "true loss for Northern Ireland" and said those responsible "will never win".

The Northern Ireland Secretary said the murder has highlighted the need to break the political impasse.

"Mr Speaker, I have heard those in Northern Ireland calling on political leaders to come together and I am sure the whole House will join me in welcoming the united display of the political leaders in the Creggan estate on Friday," she said.

"The Belfast Agreement has formed the bedrock of peace since it was reached just over 21 years ago. It must be upheld and be defended against those who would seek to undermine it.

"I intend to hold discussions with party leaders later this week to see what progress can be made.

"Our clear and overriding objective must be the restoration of all the political institutions established by the Belfast Agreement. Northern Ireland's politicians need to take charge, including in the vitally important area of tackling paramilitary activity.

"Lyra was a young and vibrant woman, who symbolised the new Northern Ireland - a modern, dynamic, outward-looking place that is open to everyone, regardless of their community background, political aspirations, race, gender or sexually.

"Yet last Thursday, Lyra McKee was killed in the most tragic of circumstances. It should not have happened and it cannot be in vain."

Earlier this week, the Ulster Unionists, Alliance and the SDLP called for an immediate restart to talks aimed at restoring devolution.

Alliance leader Naomi Long wrote to Karen Bradley, stating: "We owe it to Lyra and to all the other children of the Good Friday Agreement generation to offer an alternative to this descent into violence."

The DUP said it was ready to restore devolution and blamed Sinn Fein for the stalemate.

Sinn Fein said that if justice was to be done to the memory of the 29-year-old journalist and LGBT campaigner, commitments made in previous agreements must be honoured.

On Tuesday, Irish Tanaiste Simon Coveney met with political leaders in Belfast to discuss the Stormont deadlock in the wake of Lyra McKee's murder.
