Knifeman said he was 'a messenger from God'

By Eamonn Macdermott

A man told police that he was "a messenger from God and demons were trying to kill him", Londonderry Magistrates' Court has been told.

Christopher Woods (52) of Apartment 28 18-33 Glendermot Road in Derry appeared in court yesterday charged with possessing a blade in a public place on February 26.

The court heard that ambulance staff called police with concerns for Woods' safety. Police attended and saw the defendant walking down the street carrying a large knife and covered in blood. At interview he said he had the kitchen knife, which had an eight inch blade, to self harm but that he had no recollection of anything else. He then told police he was a messenger from God.

Defence counsel Mr. Jonathan Longman said the case was "clearly a cry for help".

He said that when Woods mixed alcohol with his medication the results could be "drastic".

Woods was sentenced to three months in prison suspended for two years.
