Labour MP wants report into bringing marriage equality to Northern Ireland

Armagh born Labour MP Conor McGinn has called for a government report into how the law should be changed to bring marriage equality to Northern Ireland.

Mr McGinn has been campaigning alongside human rights campaigners for same sex marriage to be legalised in Northern Ireland.

Same sex couples are allowed to wed in England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, but it is against the law in Northern Ireland.

Earlier this year Mr McGinn proposed a Bill to legalise same sex marriage but it was blocked at its Second Reading, meaning it could not proceed through the Commons.

The Government has recognised the issue of same sex marriage in Northern Ireland as a matter of conscience, and Equalities Minister Penny Mordaunt has told the House of Commons the issue is “in my in-tray”.

Secretary of State Karen Bradley has said it is the responsibility of devolved authorities to deliver change, but there has been no Stormont Executive in place since January 2017.

In his latest move, Mr McGinn has tabled an amendment to the Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths Bill during its Committee Stage on Wednesday, calling for an official Government report on how the law should be changed to bring about equality between same sex couples and other couples in terms of civil partnerships and marriage.

The Government has already commissioned the report for England and Wales.

Mr McGinn’s amendment calls on the Government to extend this report to Northern Ireland and to specifically set out what steps should be taken to change the law.

He has called on the Government to accept his new amendment as a way of clearly setting out how the law can change to deliver equality for same sex couples in Northern Ireland, in line with the rest of the UK and Ireland.

“Each day that passes is another day without equality for LGBT couples in Northern Ireland," the Armagh born MP said.

“I am very clear it is a fully functioning devolved Administration that should consider and implement same sex marriage in Northern Ireland – and Stormont even voted in favour of this in 2015. But the Assembly has been mothballed and there aren’t even any talks taking place at the minute about its reestablishment.

“Without any solid proposals for changing the law after my Bill to do so was blocked by one Tory backbencher, Government Ministers’ warms words about support for equality will ring hollow to those in Northern Ireland who are denied the basic right to marry the person they love."
