Lanes closed during A1 roadworks

Lanes on one of Northern Ireland's key roads will be closed for maintenance later this month.

The Belfast to Dublin dual carriageway between Dromore and Banbridge, Co Down, will be restricted for the next three weekends as Roads Service starts resurfacing work.

It will be completed over three weekends from Friday August 24 to Monday September 10. A diversion route will be signposted during all closures.

Mark McPeak, Roads Service's project manager, said: "These essential works will strengthen the A1 so that it can carry today's very high traffic volumes, provide a high-quality and an even running surface, thereby improving the safety and comfort of road users."

One lane will remain open in each direction on the A1 in a contraflow arrangement. However, there will be restrictions on traffic wanting to enter or leave the A1 within the works areas.

During the third weekend, traffic diversions will be in place for all southbound traffic entering Dromore. A temporary 40mph speed limit will also be in operation.

Mr McPeak continued: "Working times will be restricted to overnight and weekends to take advantage of the reduced traffic flows. However, some delays will be inevitable and we would ask that motorists be patient as these essential works progress."
