Large plume of smoke over Newtownabbey as firefighters deal with fire at former school site

A large plume of thick black smoke has been seen over Newtownabbey after a large quantity of rubbish was set on fire on a former school site in the town.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said that two crews are currently dealing with the fire at the former site of Newtownabbey Community High School near Rathcoole Drive and confirmed a "large quantity of rubbish" was on fire.

Firefighters were called to the scene at around 8.27pm.

The disused school was extensively damaged after vandals set fire to the site and stole building equipment in June last year.

Newtownabbey Community High School was closed in 2015 when it merged with Monkstown Community School to form a new school on the Monkstown site, called Abbey Community College.
