Larne in shock after woman killed in freak traffic accident

By Michelle Weir

The community in Larne has been left stunned after the death of a motorist following a freak accident in the town centre.

It is understood that a car reversed from the Circular Road car park, crossing the road, colliding with a telecommunications box and striking a parked car in a car park of the Laharna retail complex across the road.

Horrified Christmas shoppers rushed to the scene.

One onlooker said: "I was shopping in Argos and we all heard the impact. We were all shaken.

"People just ran to the scene. I think everyone realised how serious the accident was."

Nobody else is believed to have been injured during the incident.

Ulster Unionist councillor Andy Wilson said: "I was working nearby and was on the scene just after the lady was taken away in the ambulance.

"Even on the scene there were different versions of what had happened and whether anyone else was involved.

"It's a very busy entrance to a major retail centre near a busy roundabout, and in fact, many more people could have been badly hurt in the incident.

"The emergency responders were at the incident very quickly, but obviously it is very distressing to hear that the lady has passed away.

He added: "What exactly happened will come out in the fullness of time, but we must be mindful that a family has been plunged into mourning so close to Christmas. It is very sad."

Commenting on the tragedy, Councillor Paul Reid, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, said: "I was deeply saddened to hear of this tragedy.

"I extend my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to this woman's family and friends.

"They are in our thoughts and prayers at this awful time."

Police are appealing for information following the lunchtime collision.

A PSNI spokesman said: "The woman, aged in her 50s, was driving a Peugeot car when the crash happened on the Circular Road at around 1pm on Tuesday afternoon.

"If you witnessed this collision, please contact us on 101 (ref. 628 19/12/17)."

The woman was rushed to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital, where she died on Tuesday night. The Air Ambulance attended the scene.

Resuscitation was performed by paramedics before the lady was taken to hospital by road.

It is the second freak accident to have occurred in Larne town centre this year.

In February, a Glenarm man died after being struck by a vehicle while using a cash machine in Main Street.

Speaking at the time, a PSNI spokesperson said that a Vauxhall Vivaro van parked on the street was believed to have rolled back and struck the pedestrian who had been using the dispenser.

Michael Diaczyszyn was taken to hospital for treatment for a suspected fracture to his leg, but passed away in hospital the following morning.
