Lifeboat dedicated to tragic couple

By Sol Buckner

A new lifeboat has been named in honour of a tragic young couple who were RNLI volunteers and who died within 10 months of each other.

Bangor couple Bradley and Sonya Burns both died in 2006 but their memory will live on in the service after a new D class lifeboat called Bradley And Sonya was launched in a moving ceremony at Fenit in Co Kerry on Saturday.

Members of Bangor RNLI, who raised over £34,000 to fund the lifeboat in tribute, attended.

The lifeboat was named by Mary Connolly and Eileen Savage, the couple’s mothers . Bradley died from cancer and his wife died suddenly 10 months later.

Sonya’s sister Judy Connolly and Bangor lifeboat senior helmsman Kyle Marshall delivered the craft into the care of Fenit RNLI.

Mrs Connolly said: “Whilst we will never forget Bradley and my sister Sonya, it is some comfort to know their legacy lives on, doing what they did so well — working to save lives at sea.”
