Life-sized Prince George earns Lara her just desserts at international cake competition

By Joanne Sweeney

It's not only little girls who are made of sugar and spice - as a Belfast woman's life-sized cake depicting Prince George shows.

The bonny toddler prince helped baker Lara Mason get her just 'desserts' - a gold award - for the second time at the Cake International competition at Birmingham's NEC arena over the weekend.

Lara also enjoyed the sweet taste of success last year with her 5ft 11in-tall cake of actress Jennifer Lawrence as her Hunger Games character Katniss Everdeen at the same event.

The cake of Prince George is made up of five eight-inch Madeira cakes, half a box of Rice Krispies, two kilos of icing and another two of modelling chocolate.

It took the 29-year-old more than 30 hours of painstaking work to create the all-edible cake that stands at just under three feet in height.

Last night Lara told the Belfast Telegraph that her Prince George cake is one she just can't bear to part with. "He is a little past his best now, so I wouldn't eat him, plus he is just too cute! So I am going to keep him as a display piece," she said.

"Last year the judges said that my cakes were great but being so large they were missing on detail, and the faces in particular.

"So I went smaller and thought that I should do the most recognisable child in the world, which is Prince George."

She revealed that she did not let the small matter of her own wedding get in the way of making the winning cake sculpture.

"I got married a few weeks ago and while I started making the frame before the wedding, the majority was done in the last two weeks. It's been a mad rush," Lara admitted.

For her replica, she choose Prince George's eye-catching outfit of red shorts and red and white smocked shirt which he wore at his younger sister Princess Charlotte's christening in July.

The outfit sold out in all sizes in shops in less than a day and looked very similar to one his father Prince William wore at around the same age.

Lara Mason (nee Clarke) has been living in the West Midlands for 11 years and has now built up her own bakery business called Tasty Cakes.

Her parents and family from Belfast, Co Armagh and Co Down recently joined her in Malta where she got married just two weeks ago.

She received a major endorsement of her life-size edible Katniss Everdeen replica from Jennifer Lawrence herself who described the Co Down woman as "incredibly talented" last year.

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton is also a fan of the talented baker but she says that the next on her hit list is David Beckham or actor Channing Tatum.
