Lillis campaign slams trust’s care evaluation

Supporters of seriously-ill republican prisoner Brendan Lillis have criticised a medical assessment by the South Eastern Health Trust that he can receive “appropriate” care within Maghaberry jail.

Health Minister Edwin Poots was told by the trust, which is responsible for the provision of healthcare services within all Northern Ireland prisons, it was “confident” about the level of care that the convicted IRA bomber can be provided with inside the high- security prison.

However Lillis’s supporters rubbished the assessment, claiming that his healthcare within the jail “consisted of being left lying in a bed in a cell 24 hours a day”.

Lillis, a former life sentence prisoner, was returned to jail in 2009 after his release licence was revoked when he was arrested for robbery.

He is suffering from an arthritic condition which causes the bones in the spine to fuse.
