Limber up for late-night league

by Chris McCann

Football fever is set to grip youngsters across Belfast and beyond this month.

The next Midnight Street Soccer league is approaching and the organisers are looking for teams of 13 to 17-year-olds from all over Castlereagh to take part.

Midnight Street Soccer, currently funded by Sport Relief, was set up in 2005 as a community football project in north Belfast, providing young people with the opportunity to take part in sport at times when communities are vulnerable to crime and anti-social behaviour.

Since then the programme has gone from strength to strength and now takes place at 15 facilities across Northern Ireland.

The 10-week programme finishes with a national finals night in Dundalk.

The Castlereagh league, funded by the Community Safety Partnership, is managed by Castlereagh Borough Council in conjunction with the North Belfast Play Forum and will begin at Hanwood 3G pitch on Saturday 15 January.

Matches take place between 9pm and 12am midnight. So if you are between 13 and 17-years-old this is your chance to get involved for free.

For more information or to enter a team into the competition, please phone Lynsey McCourt, Castlereagh Borough Council, on 02890 494522 or 07825 181292.
