A Co Antrim man has appeared in court accused of drugging and raping a woman.

Kieran Vige spoke only to confirm that he understood the two charges against him, which relate to an alleged incident on June 29 last year.

The 30-year-old, from Wesley Street in Lisburn, is charged with one count of rape by having sexual intercourse with a female who did not consent, "he either knowing that the person did not consent or being reckless as to (whether) the person consented".

The defendant is further charged with administering a substance to the alleged victim, knowing that she did not consent, "with the intention of stupefying or overpowering her so as to enable a person to engage in sexual activity".

No further details about the case were revealed during the hearing at Craigavon Magistrates Court yesterday.

However, a police officer said he believed he could connect Vige to the offences.

District Judge Bernie Kelly freed the defendant on continuing bail.

He was ordered to return to court on October 16.
