Lola's a Christmas star

By Dave Whelan

Presumed to be dead by the volunteers that found her, little Shih Tzu Lola has defied the all the odds to become the star on top of the tree for one of Northern Ireland's busiest animal sanctuaries.

This year's Christmas cards and Christmas ballot tickets for Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary feature the little dog, whose tale has touched so many hearts.

Lola and her eight friends were rescued from squalid conditions where she had been locked inside a cat carrier, her leg was badly broken and so caked in faeces that she could barely move.

It was thought she was dead at first but volunteers saw her tail try to wag through her knotted filthy coat. Lola had been left with a broken leg that had 'healed' in a terrible position and the vet had no choice but to amputate the mangled leg. Lola's operation was a success but she required intensive nursing and lots of TLC, so she was fostered by one of Crosskennan's volunteers.

After going through so much together, Lola and Debbie formed a very strong bond and Debbie and her family decided to keep her, where she is now being treated like a princess.

Operating as a charity, Crosskennan is overburdened with the sheer volume of animals they have had to rescue and are constantly looking for help and support in their bid never to put a healthy animal down.

Unfortunately for the charity, last month's heavy rain on the fields and grounds meant that they have had to cancel this year's Christmas Open Day but volunteers are hoping that the public will get behind them and help raise much needed funds.

Demand for this year's ballot tickets and Xmas cards has been huge and as a result they will be opening their reception area on Sunday, December 8, from 1-3pm to allow the public to collect tickets and cards.

All the proceeds will go towards the animal welfare charity's Winter Feed fund. It will be a normal working day at the charity's yard and visitors are advised to wear suitable footwear for the muddy outdoor conditions. If you can't make it on Sunday ballot tickets and cards can be posted out if details are phoned or emailed to the sanctuary.
