Londonderry 'gas explosion' victim in critical condition

A man injured in a suspected gas explosion at a house in Londonderry is said to be 'critically ill' in hospital.

He was injured during a blast at a house in Bonds Street in the city on Monday night at around 10.30pm.

The victim is being treated for burns at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. There were reports of him being seen running from the building on fire.

The fire service confirmed he was out of the house by the time crews arrived.

A number of houses were evacuated.

Deputy Mayor of Londonderry Gary Middleton tweeted: "My thoughts and prayers are with the seriously injured man and his family at this time following the gas explosion in Bonds Street."

DUP councillor Drew Thompson said: "The gentleman appeared to be in the home and a gas cylinder there exploded."

A number of houses were evacuated.
