Longer footbridge 'would save lives in Fermanagh'

Enniskillen councillors believe that a new footbridge to a busy shopping centre would save lives, following a fatality last year.

Bert Johnston wants the owners of Ernside Shopping Centre to build a footbridge over Wellington Road to enable the traffic to flow safely underneath, preventing a repeat of a tragedy which claimed a woman’s life last year.

Commenting on the Erne’s £40m expansion plans, which already features a futuristic footbridge, Mr Johnston called for a longer bridge to overarch the nearby duel carriageway. “It is not satisfactory to be dumping shoppers onto a duel carriageway”, he said, according to the Impartial Reporter.

Councillor Robert Irvine said that his son was ‘nearly killed’ last year. “He was hit by the mirror of a vehicle. He was very close to being killed like the lady was last year. There is pedestrian pressure and I think the bridge should be carried over the carriageway.”
