A man described as a big fan of rugby star Brian O'Driscoll – who played his last home game for Ireland on Saturday against Italy – was fined £200 at Londonderry Magistrates Court when he admitted charges of disorderly behaviour and obstructing police officers.
Steven Gill (23), from Kular Court, and Ray Bonner (23), from Ivy Terrace, were stopped by police as they drunkenly walked down William Street in the Bogside last October 1. Gill was carrying the Ulster and Leinster provincial flags and Bonner was carrying the Munster and Connacht flags.
They verbally abused police and when they refused to modify their behaviour and language were both arrested.
Solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client Gill "is a big fan of Brian O'Driscoll and of Leinster rugby".
They were each fined £200.
