Lowry Portrush Open success brings to close successful police operation, says PSNI's Alan Todd

The PSNI said Shane Lowry's incredible Open win at Royal Portrush brought to a successful close their two year policing operation.

After two years of planning, 237,000 spectators, thousands of police officers out on patrol on the north coast, 20 miles of no-waiting cones, 450 traffic signs and 36 additional CCTV cameras, the final putt of the 148th Open signalled the end of an event hailed a massive success.

Police said given the size of the operation there was a relatively small number of incidents over the past week.

There were several arrests for driving with excess alcohol, low-level anti-social behaviour and a number of children went missing from their parents and lated reunited.

There were no arrests on the golf course.

Also a police motorcyclist came off his bike early on in the week and sustained a foot injury. And at least one PSNI patrol car found a sand trap.

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd, who has led on the policing operation, said his officers and staff provided a "professional and tireless service in the lead up to and during the championship week".

“The scale of this event cannot be underestimated," he said.

"Our focus as a police service has been about supporting the event organisers in relation to the traffic and transport plan, ensuring everyone gets to and from Portrush safely and minimising, as far as possible, disruption to ordinary everyday life in the town.

“The comments we have received around the policing operation from partners, spectators and the general public have been extremely positive and we have welcomed the opportunity to engage with so many visitors and residents over the course of this week.
